The Experience
Hotel de Toiras
The beautiful island of Ré is really worth a visit. Among the charming ports linked by a network of pathways to be explored by bike, crisscrossing the sandy earth, Saint Martin de Ré, surrounded by the Vauban fortifications, is the best place to stay.
The hotel de Toiras is a 17th century shipbuilder’s residence with windows overlooking the port, near the the fortress by Vauban, a UNESCO World Heritage site with spectacular views of the Atlantic.
There is also the option to stay in the newly opened Villa Clarisse, just a stone’s throw away.
Both hotels boast gardens and views of the old town. Villa Clarisse offers heated outside swimming pool.
Here, the mast of a passing fishing boat may perhaps be the only thing to disturb your view of the setting sun.

Discriminating travelers to this UNESCO World Heritage–designated town are faced with quite a dilemma — whether to stay at the five-star Hotel de Toiras or its sister property, Villa Clarisse. An enchanting 17th-century residence enviably positioned at the port’s entrance, the Relais & Châteaux Hotel de Toiras has been imaginatively restored, with 20 individually appointed rooms and gallery-worthy artworks; La Table d’Olivia is famed for its fresh cuisine. Not far away in the town’s center, the recently updated 18th-century Villa Clarisse holds her own with nine spacious guestrooms, heated pool and hidden garden.
Be a local! Grab a wicker basket from the hotel, browse the market for the day’s catch and have the kitchen prepare your personal feast. Distance from La Rochelle Airport (LRH): 15 minutes
