Day 3: Kibale National Park | Domain of the Chimpanzee
Set out on a chimpanzee-tracking excursion. Kibale Forest is home to 13 species of primates, including chimpanzees and mangabeys, as well as 300 species of birds and a brilliant array of butterflies. Drive to the Kanyanchu Research Center to begin the three-hour trek. Barks of baboons occasionally pierce the forest silence as you make your way along the trail. The chimpanzees feed high in the trees, so binoculars are a must. Day 5: Queen Elizabeth National Park | Elephants and More
Enjoy morning and evening game drives in this majestic national park. Because the region occupies the main migration corridor between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, there is prolific plains game here, primarily topi and Uganda kob, buffalo, hippos and some of the largest herds of elephants anywhere in Uganda. Spotted hyenas are common and leopards are occasionally glimpsed. However, the prime attraction is the large lion population, and the frequency of sightings for this magnificent animal is higher here than anywhere else in Uganda. You also have the option of taking a launch on the Kazinga Channel, walking through chimpanzee-rich Maramagambo Forest or visiting a nearby village.

Keep your eyes open for game as you make your way out of Queen Elizabeth National Park and continue on to Bwindi. This is a leisurely drive that takes you up and out of the Rift Valley through the Kigezi Highlands of southwestern Uganda. The scenery is increasingly more breathtaking as you switch back up and down the hills. Your journey culminates in the mist-swathed mountains of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world.

Days 7-8: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park | Gorilla Encounters
Spend your next two days tracking one of the rarest primates in the world: the endangered mountain gorilla. After an early start, your guide escorts you to the Uganda Wildlife Authority Park headquarters to meet your gorilla guide. The time needed to track gorillas on safari varies greatly, anywhere from a half hour to six hours. Once the gorillas are located, you are allowed an hour to observe them. Mothers keep infants close to their chests as they knuckle-walk on three limbs. Toddlers scamper around and often have to be reigned in by an attentive father, whose job is to protect his family. A look into the eyes of a mountain gorilla quickly seals the bond that exists between primate and human, but is also a poignant reminder that these great creatures are on the brink of extinction. After your visit with the gorillas, return to your lodge. Depending on the length of your trek, you may have the opportunity to visit the Batwa Community, take a guided forest or relax at your forest camp.
